The cost of preparing food in both the small and large Deg is approximately Rs. 15 per person, allowing devotees to plan their contribution according to the number of people they wish to serve. In this cost everything is included from ingredients to distribution.
The Deg is a large cauldron made from an alloy of seven metals, one of which was brought from Colombo, Sri Lanka. Its rim is uniquely designed to remain cool even while the bottom is ignited and the food is being cooked. This sacred cauldron exists only at Ajmer Sharif Dargah and has been installed since medieval times. It serves the purpose of cooking saffron-infused sweet rice (niyaz), which is then distributed among devotees as tabarruk.
